Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. In her early years Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to word associations. Ford began to become attracted to acting in her teens, and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After just a few weeks, she realized it was not for her. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Tate also regularly worked as a theatre actor and was eventually a part of the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate's stand-up humor that she started adding to her set in 1996, quickly gained the attention of her peers.
